Today is photo day at the boys’ daycare.  I can’t wait to see how the pictures come out!  Lately Jakob’s “say cheese!” face has a big grin but tight, squinty eyes…I’m hoping for a photo that’s not too silly looking.

Speaking of daycare, I’ve been thinking about what to make for the teachers this year.  I enjoy making something for the teachers, and they’ve told me that they appreciate it too.  Now that Henri is there, that’s a second class with another set of teachers to craft for.  Plus I make something for the owner too…so this year I wanted to find something small but that would still be appreciated.

I think I’ve settled on making the teachers each a pair of wristwarmers.  It’s small, practical and even people who don’t get cold enough to wear mittens or gloves can wear them.  They’re stretchy enough to fit a variety of wrist/hand sizes, and hopefully something I can get done in a relatively short period of time.

I didn’t want to rely on stash yarn for this mainly because I figured that the only way to make it fair would be to make everyone the same pair in the same color.  I stopped at Wal-Mart today after dropping the boys off at daycare and on my way to work.  I don’t have anything against chain-store yarn; I think that every yarn has its place in the right project.  (Well…except maybe Phentex.)  All the cotton I use for dishcloths and bath sets is from either Wal-Mart or Zellers, and a lot of the yarn I use for baby projects too.

The selection was really low today.  Either they’re getting rid of the crafts department (I noticed the fabric cutting table was gone), or someone really bought them out.  I did, however, find 4 100g balls of Bernat Satin in black- exactly the color I’d been hoping to find.

I think everyone could use a pair of cute, soft, black wristwarmers.  Hopefully the teachers will think so too!  I’m going to take another look through Ravelry, but I think I’ve pretty much settled on using this pattern– the Ravenna Mitts by Meg White (probably NOT of the White Stripes).  It’s crochet- not knitting- but it looks fast while still being pretty and feminine.

While there I came across this bag of 3 “unknown fiber” balls.  1 lb of “unknown fiber”.  Some of the “unknown fiber” bags you can tell what they are, and I liked this one.  I think it is combined with rayon or nylon…the yarn looks like a woven core wrapped with a shinier strand.  I tried to get a close-up shot to show you:

I’m sure it’s 100% fake stuff, but I love yarn like this, with a silky drape and light weight, for Summer stuff.  I won’t know the exact yardage until I run it through my yardage meter, but I’m sure I have enough for a tank top or lacy shell.

So that’s today.  And lately?

I’ve been working like mad on one special project for the last 2 months.  I had a pattern approved by KnitPicks towards the end of August, and then received the yarn to get started literally the day before my tonsillectomy.  Needless to say…I didn’t get much knitting done for a few weeks.  The one time I tried I knit in the wrong color, and that was enough to teach me that if I was going to finally get this pattern published, I would have to do it right and wait until I was off pain killers.

The knitting has been finished for about a week now, and I had the pattern photos taken last Monday.  I have been spending every night since then working on typing up the pattern so I can send everything off to KnitPicks.

You’d think with this many hours of work behind it, I would feel closer to my goal.  I don’t.  I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t get the pattern out in time for Hallowe’en…though I know that my 2 surgeries and work and health stuff with the kids had a lot to do with that, so I’m not beating myself up over it.  Still, now that the knitting is done I’m itching to move onto the next accepted design, but I can’t call this one “complete” until the pattern is written up.

Luckily I’ve finished all the laundry, and have nothing else to do each night for the rest of the week other than to finish the pattern.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can have it in the mail by Friday.

November? Already?

I can’t believe how much I want to share with you. I was looking through the photos I’ve uploaded from my camera and there are tons of photos of knitted projects, and pics of the boys…so much stuff I want to share and yet this blog has been sitting here empty. Barren.

I’m not happy about that. I think I tend to want to save a project to share with you once its complete…but that leaves the blog pretty boring in the interim. And then if I get busy and forget…well you guys get nothing new to read.

I’m not going to make a ton of promises…but I will try my best to post more often, and share what has been going on around here.

Rhinebeck BINGO!

Guess what?  Maaike and I are going to Rhinebeck this weekend!  And we’re both squares!

In case anyone comes by to blog-stalk beforehand, I thought it would be nice to give you an updated photo of me and a little peek of what I’ll be wearing.  (Sounds so fashionable, no?  “And who are you wearing, dahling?”)

This is one of my more recent photos, taken at the end of August:

My face is slimmer now, and I’ll probably have my bangs clipped back, but the hair color, length, etc are all the same.

And assuming the weather cooperates, I will be wearing my (as yet unseen on this blog and not even in Ravelry yet) Audrey:

Sorry for the blurry pic…it was that or a flash white-out.

After the last 2 months…I’m looking forwards to getting away and meeting some fellow knitters.  See you in NY!

more knitting (and crochet) under the influence

Some minor setbacks (dehydration and a slight infection) have prolonged my tonsillectomy recovery, and I’m still home from work, still barely eating, and still taking pain meds.  A few days ago I berated myself for not working on my Superhero Costume which will be published as soon as I can get it finished- but I didn’t feel like I was able to knit and design properly without a clear head.  Because of which I worked on simple projects if/when I felt able to knit.  Today I really gave myself a hard time about it because I’d really wanted it published before the beginning of October (very unlikely at this rate), and that self-goading pushed me enough to try to work on it.

I should have listened to myself!  I’ve been knitting for most of the afternoon, and slightly rewriting the pattern as I went to account for readability and ease in construction.  I didn’t take a photo, but those of you who have seen the original Superman-themed Superhero baby costume know that it is a one-piece, footed baby outfit.  The legs are knit first, toe-up, and since I’d only received the yarn for it the day before my (latest) surgery, I had only completed the first foot.  I was right at the bootie section and today joined the contrasting color for the leg, did the intarsia bit and was coasting my way through the leg increases…about 5 minutes ago…when I realized my big goof.  I have yarn for 2 versions of the pattern- one for babies and one for toddlers.  Each version has a different color scheme.  And the yarn I’d grabbed for the leg and had been knitting with all afternoon was NOT the right color.

It’s not the end of the world, though I think I will rip it out then take a little nap before continuing.  I immediately thought of “knitting under the influence” which reminded me that I’d mentioned, but never shown, the crochet mistake I made thanks to these pain killers (empracet, for those who are curious).

A friend’s daughter turned 2 this month, and had her birthday party on my birthday.  I had picked up some books as a gift (after a consult with the girl’s mommy) but when I went to wrap it and be prepared I felt like it wasn’t enough to just wrap up the books and give them.  I had a few days before the party so I asked Yannick to get out my bin of cotton (‘cus I still can’t lift anything over 10 lbs) and I picked out some bright white and some hot pink.

I’ll get more into the details of the pattern when I post finished photos, but to sum up, it’s 2 granny squares that have been joined into a bag with a base and side gussets.

You know that old reminder in knitting?  The one that goes “join, being careful not to twist”?

Oops!

At least it was an easy fix.  This has now been 3 drug-induced crafting mishaps.  Hopefully 3 times is the charm and this will be the end of it!

Of course, I will end up needing a 3rd surgery, so hopefully 3 times is a charm there too!!

tuesday

I know it’s not Tuesday.  But it was Tuesday, Aug 31st when I drafted the photos for this post, and I don’t have the energy or desire to go change the permalink.

It’s been a lot of same-old around here since my last post…at least until today.  So now I’m grumpy.  Why I’m choosing to post while grumpy is beyond me, but I found a few minutes of time so here you go.

I did some crochet this week.  I’ve been working on one project as a birthday gift for a friend, then decided to squeeze another project in a few days ago.  That one proved to me that, just like knitting, crochet doesn’t work well while on painkillers.  I took photos before fixing my mistake, but they’re still on my camera.

Here are the boys last month sometime.  Henri loves wearing stuff on his head…hats, glasses, etc.  That’s a pair of sunglasses he’s got on there.  Jakob is always pulling Henri’s chair over to feed him or swipe food off his tray.

This was one of the progress photos of the Enchanted Forest Cardigan.  It’s hard to see, but it’s the complete back (on the right) with the left front attached by 3ndl BO on the shoulder.  That’s not in the pattern, but I prefer it to seaming the shoulders, so I’d short-rowed the decreases to prepare for it.

A shot of Jakob wearing Yannick’s sunglasses.  Just because.

Here’s the back of the cardi after I’d seamed in the sleeve and the side seam.

And here’s the fronts.  Since this photo was taken I’ve finished seaming both sleeves and the sides, and picked up and done a few rows of the button band.  I’m planning on ripping out the sleeves to redo them and make them more streamlined, ‘cus really, they’re huge.  It’s cute when they’re pushed up, but that’s about it.

This is one of Henri’s 18 month chair photos.  I can’t believe what a big, gorgeous boy he is.  Let’s just bask in that and ignore all the eczema, m’kay?

As for me…I’ve got a few more patterns coming out with KnitPicks, some I’m currently working on, and some waiting for the yarn to arrive.  I’m healing from the surgery, and gearing up for the tonsils next Friday.  Tomorrow’s my birthday, and I’m seeing friends in the afternoon and evening, and that will be a lot of fun.  And this afternoon my hernia popped out again.  So apparently, despite the odds, I had a screwed up c-section AND a hernia in another random spot.  It hurts, and it really, really sucks, but I’ll get it all sorted out.  And eventually I’ll be all fixed up.

Eventually.  I hope.

knitting while impaired

I have another post in draft mode, all ready with photos and just waiting for the text.  I was going to try to work on it tomorrow, but tonight I found such a silly mistake in my knitting that I had to pre-empt myself to share it with you.

While on leave from work I decided to do some knitting for the boys.  First I got out Jakob’s mitered square blankie and rummaged through the sock yarn stash until I found the ends and bits of the same colors, and then used them in Henri’s so they would have the matching colors.

The photo below shows the order.  While Jakob’s blankie is mitered squares, Henri’s is garter squares that meander around in a big spiral from the center.

I picked it up and began square #6, and by working on it off-and-on, along with a long car ride to and from Toronto last weekend, managed to get 26 squares done.  The big blue area is to match the same one in Jakob’s blanket.

Now that Henri’s is underway, I wanted to work on Jakob’s for a bit.  Almost all of the diamonds and triangles were already done.  Yesterday I did the red and black square between the pink and the large blue one.  I knew that today I’d have some knitting time at the hospital, because I had my pre-op appointment for my tonsillectomy.  I wanted to be able to just grab the knitting and go, in case I had to keep putting it down, so I decided to cast on last night before going to bed and get the next diamond ready for today.

I chose the Toasted Almond sock yarn from the last pair of socks I knit for myself, and thought I was being really clever in working one of the side diamonds.

Not so clever after all.  Only after I finished the diamond tonight did I realize that this diamond has no place being where it is!  D’oh!

The lesson here is two-fold: 1. always double-check your work when knitting on painkillers, and 2. if you rush to get something done before bed, you’ll probably regret it in the morning.

And on that note…off to rip…

friday

It’s Friday now, and there’s not much more to report.  I’m surprised that I’m not already starting to feel better, and I have to keep reminding myself that after each boy was born, I was in the hospital for 4 days and only came home in the afternoon of the 4th day, so now is only about the time I would have come home from the hospital.  And I would have a newborn to care for, to distract me and to take up all my attention.  Between the baby and the cooing and cuddling and nursing and diapers and the snatches of the second or two of sleep you can grab, no wonder I don’t remember much about the pain of the surgery itself after each child was born.

I’m sleeping a lot more than I had expected to.  The pain pills are tricky- I can take 1 or 2 every 4 hours; when I take 1 it barely numbs the edge of the pain, but if I take 2 it knocks me out within minutes.  I’m trying to eat enough to not get any side effects, but I still have to take 12-hr Gravol twice a day and I’m still having dizzy/nausea spells.

Wednesday night I was able to watch tv for the first time and caught up on some America’s Got Talent with Yannick.  One hour was enough for me, and it was back up to bed.  Yesterday hit me hard with 2 dizzy spells, and the only thing that makes them pass is to sleep it off, so that’s pretty much all I did.  I took off the bandages for the first time so I could shower, and had two surprises when first  a few spots started bleeding (scaring the crap out of me…but I think it was just a scab that got pulled off with the bandage) and then noticing that I had 18 STAPLES!  The nurses had told me I didn’t need anyone to come take staples out, like I’d had done on the 5th day post-babies, because I didn’t HAVE any staples.  They said it was all stitches, and it would be fine to wait until I see the surgeon for a follow-up next Thurs (10th day post-op).  Well huh- 18 shiny staples, all in a row.  Fun…

I leave you with this photo of Jakob from Sunday night.  Apparently he did the hair pomade thing himself.  🙂

wednesday

Let’s face it- description of surgery is icky. To try and negate the ick factor of this post, I’m mixing it up with some recent photos of the boys, taken St-Jean Baptiste Day weekend.

Monday morning I had to be at the hospital for 6:45am to check in for the day surgery. The operation itself was booked for 7:45, the first of the day. I was all prepared to have only the right side hernia repaired, and to have to do this all again in a few months. My surgeon came to see me in the hallway as I was being wheeled into the OR, and gave me a quick examination (HELLO cool breeze and flashing the entire hallway!). He hemmed and hawed about doing only what he’d planned, or redoing the whole thing- it’s preferable to do only once side and let me recover before doing the other, but I was in so much pain on both sides that he told me he’d open the right side and see what he could see and decide once he was in.

They brought me into the OR and moved me from my bed to the table, strapped my arms down and then the anesthesiologist told me he was going to give me something to make me sleep. A few seconds later the edges of my vision got a bit blurry…and I never even noticed passing out. Unlike the movies, there was no mask over my face, no “count down”. Just a slow, soft, easy fading away.

I woke up in the recovery room. I remember feeling pain pretty quickly, but the nurses were really prompt and gave me something for the pain. I’m allergic to morphine, so they gave me fentanyl which works, but wears off sooner than morphine would. I think it took an hour or two before they wheeled me back to my bed’s slot in the day surgery ward. From that point on I would be allowed to leave as soon as I could go to the washroom. I was still in a lot of pain so they gave me a big shot of demerol with some gravol and I slept for a while longer. My mom came in to see me a few times, and I had my ipod with me but I couldn’t pay attention to the Cory Doctorow podcasts* I’d brought to listen to, because I kept drifting in and out.

I still had no clue what had been done to me. I couldn’t tell by feeling the bandages if my surgeon had done just one side or both, and the nurse couldn’t decipher his handwriting on the notes in my file. In the meantime they wanted me to go pee, but when the nurse moved away my blankets so I could prepare to stand, she saw I had a catheter in! Eventually everything that had to be moved was moved, and I stood up to prepare to walk to the washroom. I felt fine, and said so, and then all of a sudden nausea hit me so fast- I had no time to react. My throat felt tight, I felt flushed and hot and I had to sit down NOW. The nurse and my mom quickly got me back into bed though the relief at lying back down was tempered by the pain of moving that fast.

I was given an injection of something for the nausea even though I felt better immediately upon sitting down. They made me wait around an hour before trying to stand again, and in the interim the nurse managed to find my surgeon and bring him over so we could ask him our questions. I was a little out of it, but from what I could understand, he had opened the right side as planned, but was able to see right away that things were a mess inside and he could see the hernia on the left too, so he made the decision to completely open my 19-month-old c-section, fix both hernias, and redo the c-section. Had I been any older he never would have done it like that, but since I’m still young-ish, and pretty healthy, he decided it was worth the risk.

After that it was another hour or so before I could leave. A quick (ok, slow, shuffling) walk to the bathroom, some help putting on my clothes, and then it was back home into my own bed, where I’ve stayed for most of the last two days.  The living room couch just isn’t comfortable right now, and the one in the den is too deep for me to get in and out of yet, so I’ve been holed up in bed with a netbook my cousin lent me, a puzzle book my neighbor brought over, and my ipod.

Yesterday had a small setback where too much medicine + not enough food = nausea and vomiting, and let me tell you heaving to throw up when you’ve just had your belly cut open is NOT fun.  Luckily it passed quickly and now I’ve been careful to eat a little more and take gravol 30 minutes before my pain pills.

All in all, in essence I just had a c-section, so obviously there is going to be some pain.  Unlike the last 2 times, however, I don’t have a newborn to care for, and have been getting a lot of sleep, and a lot of rest.  My friends and family have been awesome, giving me more support than I need.

Now I think I’m going to try and stay up a little bit longer, and I just *might* pick up my needles…if I can find them before the pain meds kick in.

*awesome free sci-fi, btw.

**These gorgeous photos were taken by Avi of Red Button Photo, and the boys’ matching jackets were handmade (!) by Catherine of HairSprayMafia.

sunday

I wonder how many of you read this blog for the knitting stuff and skim the personal facts, and how many of you skim the knitting to see what’s been going on in our lives.

I’ve thought about posting so often lately, but I don’t because I don’t have the time to put up photos, and I wonder if you even care that there are no photos, if it means there will at least be a blog post.

I miss blogging, and I miss the interaction with those (few) of you who read me. And lately I’ve been torn between wanting to talk and share and get advice and vent, and keeping everything inside and keeping this an infrequent blog about knitting.

I’m still torn about the direction this is going to stick with, but I can’t stand sitting silent with the occasional “look- published pattern!” post. That’s not me, that’s not why I started blogging.

Knitting-
I’m currently working on another pattern for KnitPicks, as well as a pattern or two to self-publish. I have completed all but the cuffs of the Enchanted Forest cardigan, but am planning on undoing and redoing the sleeves, because the 80’s batwing look is SO NOT me. I’m 2/3 of the way through my current pair of traveling socks, knit with the Regia Canadian Colors Ontario colorway. I’m also 80% finished a pillow design that my sister-in-law requested oh, a year or two ago.

Family-
Yannick and I finished our first year of school! Our final exam was last Sunday, and after many marathon study sessions, we both found it easier than we’d expected. We still have a few little assignments to mail in, but the majority of the first year is complete and we now have a little break until year 2 (of 4) starts in January.

Jakob is the funniest little chatterbox I’ve ever met, and it’s scary how much attitude can come in such a small package. The other day I peeked in his room at 10:30pm, expecting him to be asleep ‘cus it was so quiet. He was holding the Cat in the Hat book and his Diego dome-light, looks up at me and says “What Mom? I’m just reading.” He’s moved up to the bigger (2nd oldest) class in daycare, and is in the middle of mostly-successful potty-training.

Henri is awesome, funny, sweet and really, really silly. He’s almost as big as Jakob and is stubborn as heck, but whereas Jakob is a Daddy’s Boy all the way, Henri lately seems to be more of a Mommy’s Boy and always wants me to be standing up holding and cuddling him, and I love it!

We’ve been going through more health issues with Henri, though. I swear, this poor kid can’t catch a break! Long-time readers will remember some of the issues we’ve been through in his short life so far- the tongue tie, the nursing, the food issues, possible allergies, his horrible eczema, the scary infection…it seems to never end. This has been the scariest so far, though. I’ll get into more detail another time, but to sum up, he has started walking funny, and the doctors aren’t sure why. We’ve done some tests, but are waiting to do others before any diagnosis is made.

And finally, my last bit of news is that I will be having surgery tomorrow. Both sides of my last c-section have herniated, and the doctor will be going in to fix the right side tomorrow. He’s not able to tell yet if it is an inguinal hernia or an incisional one, but I don’t think it would change anything, either way. As if this weren’t bad enough, the sciatic (sp?) nerve on my right leg has been on/off pinched or caught or something for the last few weeks, and the last few days have been more “on” than “off”, today especially, and I can’t take even Tylenol or Advil because of the surgery. So in a way I’m looking forwards to getting some pain killers not so much for the surgery, but to help my leg!

I can’t drive for 10 days, and can’t lift the boys for 6-8 weeks, so my mom and Yannick are going to be doing a lot around here over the next little while. We’re really lucky to have my mom and siblings here to help out while Yannick is at work with my dad, ‘cus otherwise he’d have to leave work early every day. I’m going to take some time off work and rest. I’ve got some mindless knitting, some dvds and an ipod full of sci-fi and knitting podcasts. I’m all set! Now if only I weren’t freaking out about being put under…

something old, something new

Now that it’s official, I’m excited to announce that I have 2 patterns available through Knit Picks’ Independent Designers Program!

The first pattern is an update of a pattern I’d published in 2008. The pattern was in a calendar, and since it isn’t easy to purchase old, outdated calendars, I have updated the pattern info and made it available again:

Felted Poker Coasters

Felted Poker Coasters

It’s time to go “all in” and knit up a set of felted coasters.

These playing-card-themed coasters knit up so fast that they would make a great hostess gift, and if you start now you can have a set ready in time for the next big game.

This pattern would work well for beginners to knitting in intarsia, as the felting would hide any uneven tension changes for those unfamiliar to color work. One ball of the Cloud (white) and two balls each of the Red and Coal (black) are enough yarn to make a full set of 12 coasters.

Ante up!

You can purchase the pattern for $1.99 US through Knit Picks’ website here.

The next pattern has is one that I’ve been knitting for a while and giving away as gifts.  Now you can make one too!

My First Superhero

My First Superhero

Knit in Comfy Worsted, My First SuperHero is a quick, cuddly knit sure to please kids of all ages!

This pattern is a great moneysaver as one ball of each of the four colors required make two complete toys as shown.

He’s a “super” introduction to intarsia too, making him a good project for beginners looking to expand their skills. There are no loose bits and the cape is knit directly from the back-neck, so My First SuperHero is safe for even the youngest children. I have included a full alphabet and number chart so that each toy can be personalized for the recipient.

Taking only a few nights to complete, you’ll be the hero with this last-minute gift!

You can purchase the pattern for $1.99 through Knit Picks’ web site here.
